Vapor – open source cross-platform Steam client… sort of

Ever wanted a cross-platform lightweight Steam chat client? Then Vapor may be looking the goods.
Yes, chat. That is indeed what Vapor is, at least for the time being. You can use it to connect to your Friends list on Steam and chat to your friends, see what they are playing etc. But you can’t play your games through it or any of that other fun Steam stuff. But then, I don’t imagine Valve would take too kindly to that anyway I found this mentioned in the Steam forums yesterday and thought it worth mentioning for anyone looking for something like this and willing to try it.

It is what it is, it allows you to connect to your Friends network, accept/remove friends, chat to them and so on. It’s features are coming along nicely and it’s a testament to the skill of the community, or in particular the creator himself, VoiDed:
Warning: The above has not been yet commented on (read: approved or disapproved) by Valve and if you use it (Vapor) and get your account banned it’s your fault!
It’s also worth mentioning I have not yet tried this myself but I may well do so soon.

If you really want to try something like this (and it’s worth noting I believe some people have got this running this on Android, which shows you the potential of it) I advise you go to the above link and read the whole thread, you can see the development that’s gone into it, what’s needed to install it, and the possible risks of using it, however it seems quite a few people are happily using it and so far no issues. Even better, if you know your coding, perhaps you can even help VoiDed and the team out and see what you can debug and /or improve.
I’ll hopefully try this soon enough and when I do I’ll update this on my experience with it. Nevertheless, without a native Steam client on Linux, this is something nice to see and hopefully Valve realise how much the community wants this sort of thing.
